HDC 2010 for Team Connor

I want to
thank Robert Herrera for bidding on our hunt in
A week before their hunt the weather man predicted a severe
cold front to arrive the day before them and sure enough, wouldn’t you know, he
was right for once. The high temp for their two day hunt reached maybe mid
teens and dropped overnight into negative 20’s actual temperature with a wind
chill in the minus 30 range. Upon meeting them the first morning they were
eager to get hunting and thanked me numerous times for not backing out……are you
kidding me? I’m not sure but if my memory serves me correctly they came from 60
degree weather. Thank you guys for sticking it out!
Obviously
the weather screwed up the patterns of our waterfowl. Not only has our normal
migration not occurred yet, the birds we did have got pushed off the river.
Despite all that, we managed to
scrape a few ducks in the morning from a heated
pit with an unsuccessful layout hunt in the afternoon for geese. Yes, it was
way too cold for a layout hunt but they were the instigators, I swear! We were
able to hunt a side channel of the river the next day and managed a couple
ducks but the best part of the hunt came in the last 15 minutes of legal
shooting hours. Unbeknownst to me until the second day of the hunt, neither
Jeff had ever shot a Canada goose. Both were able to accomplish that feat and
one of those big dark geese was a Quill!
We had a lot of fun and the barrels never got hot but I met three guys who are more than welcome to hop into my pit whenever they like.
Thanks to:
Doug, for organizing this and allowing two hoodlums to host a hunt; Chris
Jobman, of
Flatlander Kennels, for his help in organizing and hosting the hunt;
Kevin Soto, of Duck Haven Outfitters, for supplying the field and creek for our
first days hunt; and of course Robert for purchasing the hunt and supporting
such a great cause!
Please look
for Chris and me next year. I hope we can put a hunt together again, maybe with
a lot more birds and a little warmer weather though!

Notes: You will be bidding on a 2-3 person,
2 day hunt in Western NE with Flatlander Kennels. We will be pursuing waterfowl-
ducks and Canada geese- from pits, blinds and layout blinds, in dry fields or on
the famed North Platte River depending on your preference of fowl and location.
Ducks over water will be hunted with a large spread of GHG Life-Size Mallard
floaters and GHG Full Body Mallards. Ducks and geese hunted in dry fields or
meadows will be hunted over GHG FFD Elite Honker and Lesser Full Body decoys and
FFD Elite Life-Size Canada shells.
There will also be
a possibility for afternoon hunts, depending on the time of year chosen, season
dates and weather. We have an abundance of coyotes, prairie dogs and also
pheasants.
Accommodations: We can assist you in finding a local
hotel/motel within 20 minutes of the hunt sites. You will be responsible for
your own reservations.
Equipment Needed: Layered clothing for removal from
heated pits or blinds but dress as if hunting from layout blinds. Chest waders
are an option but not a necessity as you may want pictures from the water. 12 or
20 gauge shotguns choked in IC or Mod. with your preference of non-tox loads
sized no. 4 for ducks and a heavier load for geese. Permits can be purchased on
the Nebraska Game and Parks website (recommended) or
locally.
